Brooklyn Yoga School is closing! Come celebrate nine years of Brooklyn Yoga School at our Closing Party on Saturday, February 16th. We will be chanting and saying goodbye, telling stories and enjoying the space together one last time. Chanting will be led by Lily Cushman, Ambika Pressman, Nina Rao Shyama Chapin and friends. Join us from 8-11pm EST. This event will be livestreamed via the BYS facebook page as well.

Lily is the co-founder and director of the Brooklyn Yoga School, a donation-based yoga center founded in 2010, voted "Best of New York" by New York Magazine. She has been teaching yoga for over ten years and practicing daily since 1998.

Ambika has been a singer and musician for most of her life, playing in various bands in NYC until she discovered chanting with Krishna Das in 1995. Kirtan had a profound effect on her, and lead her to India where she met her teacher and Spiritual Mother, Shri Siddhi Ma. Her first full-length album, "Mother's Calling", produced by Lily Cushman, is now available everywhere to purchase or stream.

Shyama loves to chant the Divine Names and feels lucky and blessed to be able to center her days around this practice. She leads kirtan in NYC and beyond, has been singing in Krishna Das’ Posse, live and on his recordings, for many years. Alongside her own kirtan schedule, Shyama teaches harmonium to accompany chant practice and community kirtan to students in the New York metropolitan area.

Anjula was raised in a very devotional family that revered Indian classical music as one of the highest forms of spirituality. While growing up, she frequently traveled throughout India, where she learned to chant and discovered how fulfilling it was to express her devotion through her own voice.

This evening is a way to grow our chanting community by offering a space for newer or less experienced kirtan wallahs to lead the practice of chanting in a group setting.

Shambhu Das' roots in Kirtan go back to 1997, Monday nights at Jivamukti, chanting the Divine Names with Krishna Das. The path lit by singing these Revealed Names has led to his meeting his teacher, Sri Siddhi Ma and finding his Guru, Sri Neem Karoli Baba.

Satya Franche leads kirtan in the NY area and beyond, and is the founder of Ma Kirtan. A singer since childhood, a Berklee graduate, she has worked extensively as a session vocalist/jingle singer. The guru guides her new CD, "Love is in the Name".

Sharada Devi is a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba. She has traveled throughout India for the past thirty plus years in various temples playing music with the kirtan musicians. "I began to soak up the melodic tunes and found my heart in constant rhythym with the beat of the drum. The simple repetitions of the chants fill my spirit and bring forth a greater understanding of the dance of true love."

Nina learned traditional chants from her grandfather in a village in south India when she was nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. In 2007, she recorded a track "Nina Chalisa" on Krishna Das' CD, Flow of Grace. In 2013, she released her first CD: Antarayaami - Knower of All Hearts. She is also featured on Kirtan! the live chant CD recorded at BYS.

Vita grew up in a Soviet republic of Kazakhstan studying classical piano. She later sang in a variety of choirs, from classical to gospel, in Russia & UK. She was introduced to Jazz, Bossa Nova and traditional Indian call & response devotional singing (kirtan).

Join the Ma Squad for a special three-hour kirtan workshop on Friday, April 13th, from 8 - 11pm. The evening will focus on the Hanuman Chalisa, with one hour of teaching on the meaning and pronunciation of the prayer, followed by two hours of chanting, led by Ambika, Lily Cushman and Shyama Chapin. Each kirtan wallah will be sharing her own connection and understanding of this unique practice, and leading her own melodies of the mantra.
