April, 2011

Dear Friends,

This past March marked one year since opening our doors! We didn't know what to expect when we started this journey, but have been awed by the response from the community. We have seen many lives changed through the commitment to the practice of Yoga. Classes at the space are regularly at capacity! Friday night Kirtan has developed a weekly following of many people gathering to sing the Divine names together. Workshops and lectures have been filling up fast. One of the most difficult things has been not having the space to serve all those who want to come and practice!

Many of you have been asking how (and if) our donation model is working. It has been an incredible learning process for us of how to operate with a business model that is so unconventional in our culture. Donations have steadily increased throughout the year, however, we are still barely making enough to survive. Though many who take class are very generous, our classes average only $3 - 4 donation per person. As you know, the donations we receive are our sole source of income, covering monthly rent, operational expenses, and the livelihood of our dedicated teachers. However, we don't make enough right now to pay our teachers what they deserve. In the long run, we need to begin generating more income if we are going to be able to support this thriving community in a sustainable way.

If you are someone who participates regularly in class, or simply wants to support others by helping maintain our school, we ask you to consider offering a larger donation at this time. You can make donations online by clicking here, or snail mail checks to "Brooklyn Yoga School" at 82 Sixth Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217. Thank you all for your amazing love and support. We look forward to another year of sharing in the practice together.

Love,
Lily & Jeremy,
